The BYD-ization is advancing under the radar: European zombie factories, a passport to Chinese industry
Tactic for dodging tariffs and easing trade tensions could raise costs, compliance risks.
This article is part of the broader context of “BYD-ization,” a concept we have formalized and developed in a series of articles cited in the notes at the very end.

NdE. The Nikkei Asia article we present here, linked below, describes an apparently contradictory reality: Chinese automakers are buying up aging factories in Europe while simultaneously threatening, if the price isn’t low enough, to build brand-new ones from scratch. At first glance, it seems vague, as if anything were possible and nothing had been decided.
In reality, the article documents a moment of strategic fluidity in the negotiations between China and Europe. For several weeks, we have been analyzing in our columns the concept of BYD-ization — the reconfiguration of global industrial standards through vertical integration, component mastery, embedded software, and ultra-short development cycles. A BYD-ized factory cannot be an old internal combustion engine production line onto which robots and artificial intelligence have been grafted. It is designed, from the very beginning, around the battery, the cloud, and entirely rethought workflows powered by AI.
Why, then, take an interest in the old factories of Ford, Stellantis, or Volkswagen? Because taking them over is, first and foremost, a political gesture: it is about soothing fears of deindustrialization, circumventing punitive tariffs, securing a regulatory entry ticket, and occupying the media space with a reassuring narrative — “we are saving local jobs.”
Once this political foothold has been secured, the promised modernization can take on an entirely different form: keeping what is useful — the land, the permits, the social display, the access to subsidies — and progressively replacing what really matters: the workflows, the software, the suppliers, the organization of work, until the site is largely rebuilt around BYD-ized standards.
What the Nikkei Asia article reveals, then, is the tactical phase of a multi-sided negotiation. Both camps are testing hybrid formats — partial buyouts, capacity sharing, joint ventures — without anyone yet knowing whether they will hold over time. The vagueness is not a flaw in the article. It is the faithful snapshot of a balance of power that has not yet found its definitive shape. /NdE
